Pass or Fail: Grading NBC’s Trailers Pt 2

Outlaw

Jimmy Smits is a hotshot lawyer who plays by his own rules… but he gets results! I’m glad to see that NBC is going for a fresh take on the courtroom drama. I haven’t seen a hotshot lawyer play by his own rules like this since every other courtroom drama on tv (plus House is the same thing, just set in a hospital). It also reveals the conclusion of the pilot in the trailer, which seems like a dumb move. There’s a moment where, as Jimmy Smits is loose-cannoning around his apartment, he is slapping a baseball bat against his palm for no good reason. For a split second, I thought it was a gigantic black dildo. That was the best part of this trailer.

Fail

Chase

This is a straightforward US Marshals show. They intend the hook to be the hard boiled female lead, but this is not a hook. At this point, it’s a cliche.

Fail

Harry’s Law

Kathy Bates is a hotshot lawyer who plays by her own rules… but she gets results! The opening of this trailer is awesome (what’s not to like about Kathy Bates tootin’ on a big ol’ hogleg?), but it starts to lose me when it says “from the creator of Ally McBeal”. And what’s with these lawyer shows revealing the end of the pilot? They’re basically just letting you know that every episode will be completely predictable.

Close Pass

The Cape

I don’t even know what to say about this one… a superhero trained by secret underground circus folk, with a magical cape that he uses as a weapon. The idea that his family wouldn’t recognize him in his superhero get up would be a lot easier to swallow if the show were called The Mask.

Fail

School Pride

It’s Extreme Home Makeover for schools. I’m not into that show, but this seems like a better premise for people that are into that kind of thing. Also, mold is gross, so I’ll give a pass to any show that involves network money being spent on mold removal.

Pass

Pass or Fail: Grading NBC’s New Trailers Pt 1

Undercovers

As a fan of J.J. Abrams, I was looking forward to this one the most. Unfortunately, I was already saying “meh” at the 10 second mark. Too cheesy. Then I got to “sexspionage” and I kinda wanted to throw up.

Fail

Friends With Benefits

I was pleasantly surprised at the beginning, but less so as the trailer went on. I’m a fan of Ryan Hansen (Veronica Mars, Party Down), not so much when it comes to Fran Kranz (Dollhouse), though a comedy should suit him better than a drama.

Pass

Outsourced

The lead actor is weak. The jokes are dumb – intentionally I’m sure, but dumb all the same.

Fail

Love Bites

The voice over (and hair) left me cringing. It seems to be going for a Sex and the City type vibe. Ugh. (Tim says: Having a penis, I was not even remotely interested. Lex says: Having a vagina, I was not even remotely interested.)

Fail

Perfect Couples

Despite myself, this one made me laugh. More than once.

Pass

Paul Reiser Show

I don’t even have to watch the trailer. The name says it all. I’d honestly prefer a remake of My Two Dads.

Fail

The Event

I’m not expecting a lot from this after being severely disappointed by both V and FlashForward, but the trailer piqued my interest which is all you can really hope for with a trailer.

2009 Emmy Predictions

September 20, 2009 by Tim & Lex

After a brief hiatus, TVCasualties is BACK with our mothereffing Emmy Predictions. YEAH!

Drama Series:
Big Love” (5/1)
Breaking Bad” (2/1)
Damages” (7/2)
Dexter” (10/1)
House” (9/2)
Lost” (15/2)
Mad Men” (1/2)

Our Pick: Breaking Bad
In the most humble opinion of the TVCasualties, this is the best show on television. It combines the artistic quality of an HBO series with the suspenseful elements of serials like Lost and the  X-Files, making it the perfect blend of art and entertainment. From top to bottom, it’s a fucking awesome production.

Our Prediction: Mad Men
While Breaking Bad is my first choice, I wouldn’t be upset to see the favorite, Mad Men pull out a back-to-back win. The second season was better than the first, and in two seasons the show has solidified itself as one of the best shows of the decade, let alone right now.

Comedy Series:
30 Rock” (2/7)
Entourage” (8/1)
Family Guy” (7/1)
Flight of the Conchords” (12/1)
How I Met Your Mother” (5/1)
The Office” (3/1)
Weeds” (10/1)

Our Pick & Our Prediction: 30 Rock
Though I would have loved to see Party Down get at least a nomination, 30 Rock remains the funniest show on TV. My only complaint is that the show has become rather gratuitous with the guest spots, and those that feature the guest prominently usually aren’t very funny.

Reality Competition Program:
American Idol” (5/1)
Dancing with the Stars” (1/1)
Project Runway” (6/1)
The Amazing Race” (5/4)
Top Chef” (5/1)

Our Pick and Our Prediction: Top Chef
Bravo has had the best reality shows in the last 5 years. Project Runway’s last season was probably the weakest, and Top Chef has maintained the excitement throughout each season. Not that it wasn’t frustrating as hell to watch that douchebag, Hosea, win it.

Lead Actor in a Drama Series:
Simon Baker, “The Mentalist” (2/1)
Gabriel Byrne, “In Treatment” (5/1)
Bryan Cranston, “Breaking Bad” (3/2)
Michael C. Hall, “Dexter” (15/3)
Jon Hamm, “Mad Men” (2/1)
Hugh Laurie, “House” (7/2)

Our Pick: Gabriel Byrne
No show relies more on it’s lead actor than In Treatment. And because of the content and the format, no actor connects more directly with the audience than Gabriel Byrne. I’m not saying it couldn’t have been a good show without him, but it definitely would have been a different show. It’s so intensely personal that I can’t help but get the feeling that Byrne is a pretty cool dude.

Our Prediction: Bryan Cranston
Another pretty cool dude. Because of his role in Malcolm in the Middle, I’d sort of written Cranston off as a lame sitcom actor. I was dead wrong. The writers of Breaking Bad put Cranston’s character, Walter White, in an endless variety of awkward, tense, and downright disastrous situations, and he nails every scene.

Lead Actress in a Drama Series:
Glenn Close, “Damages” (1/1)
Sally Field, “Brothers and Sisters” (3/2)
Mariska Hargitay, “Law & Order: SVU” (15/2)
Holly Hunter, “Saving Grace” (5/1)
Elisabeth Moss, “Mad Men” (5/1)
Kyra Sedgwick, “The Closer” (5/2)

Our Pick and Our Prediction: Elisabeth Moss
I’m calling for an upset on this one, based partially on the strength of Mad Men, in addition to Moss becoming a more central character.

Lead Actor in a Comedy Series:
Alec Baldwin, “30 Rock” (2/3)
Steve Carell, “The Office” (2/1)
Jemaine Clement, “Flight of the Conchords” (15/2)
Jim Parsons, “The Big Bang Theory” (5/2)
Tony Shalhoub, “Monk” (15/2)
Charlie Sheen, “Two and a Half Men” (5/1)

Our Pick and Our Prediction: Alec Baldwin
This will make it two in a row for Baldwin. He’s still the funniest character on the funniest show.

Lead Actress in a Comedy Series:
Christina Applegate, “Samantha Who?” (4/1)
Toni Collette, “United States of Tara” (5/2)
Tina Fey, “30 Rock“  (1/3)
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “The New Adventures of Old Christine” (15/2)
Mary-Louise Parker, “Weeds“  (8/1)
Sarah Silverman, “The Sarah Silverman Program

Our Pick and Our Prediction: Tina Fey
30 Rock outclasses all of the other shows by a long stretch, plus Fey can pull of pretty much any style of comedy- self deprecating, silly, awkward, robot-penis, and more,

Reality Host:
Tom Bergeron, “Dancing with the Stars
Tom Colicchio & Padma Lakshmi, “Top Chef
Phil Keoghan, “The Amazing Race
Heidi Klum, “Project Runway
Jeff Probst, “Survivor Vanuatu
Ryan Seacrest, “American Idol

Our Pick and Our Prediction: Tom Colicchio (& Padma Lakshmi)
I actually wish it were possible for only Tom to win this award, because Padma has become a real harpy lately. Some of her comments (in particular, calling  Stefan’s dessert in last year’s finale “pedestrian at best”) were so pretentious I almost projectile vomited on the tv screen. Strong words for a chick who gets paid to stand there and look pretty as she nibbles amuse-bouche.

Supporting Actor in a Drama Series:
Christian Clemenson, “Boston Legal” (15/2)
Michael Emerson, “Lost” (3/2)
William Hurt, “Damages” (20/23)
Aaron Paul, “Breaking Bad” (4/1)
William Shatner, “Boston Legal“  (5/1)
John Slattery, “Mad Men” (3/1)

Our Pick: John Slattery
I can’t quite put my finger on why I like this guy so much, but I do. He’s one of those guys where I get the feeling that there’s a little bit of himself in the character, but there’s also not another character on TV quite like it.

Our Prediction: Aaron Paul
While Slattery is our pick, we won’t be disappointed at all if Aaron Paul wins. He’s a fanfuckingtastic character on one of our favorite tv shows. Cranston did a lot of the heavier lifting in the first season, but season 2 was an emotional rolly-coaster for Aaron’s character, Jesse. This is one of the most pathetic characters that you’ll still end up rooting for.

Supporting Actress in a Drama Series:
Rose Byrne, “Damages“  (5/4)
Hope Davis, “In Treatment” (13/4)
Cherry Jones, “24” (4/1)
Sandra Oh, “Grey’s Anatomy” (11/2)
Dianne Wiest, “In Treatment” (11/2)
Chandra Wilson, “Grey’s Anatomy” (1/1)

Our Pick and Our Prediction: Dianne Wiest
And it’s not just because she was the mom in the original The Lost Boys movie. It’s immensely entertaining to watch her and Gabriel Byrne play a sort of chess match with complex psychological and emotional concepts.

Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series:
Jon Cryer, “Two and a Half Men” (7/2)
Kevin Dillon, “Entourage” (15/2)
Neil Patrick Harris, “How I Met Your Mother” (4/7)
Jack McBrayer, “30 Rock” (5/1)
Tracy Morgan, “30 Rock” (5/2)
Rainn Wilson, “The Office” (3/1)

Our Pick: Kevin Dillon
Entourage as a show would be boring at this point without Dillon’s character.

Our Prediction:
Neil Patrick Harris
He’s the hostest with the mostest… and he’s hilairous, too. The fact that I still hear people uttering words of shock when they find out that “Barney is GAY?!” makes it even better.

Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series:
Kristin Chenoweth, “Pushing Daisies” (9/4)
Jane Krakowski, “30 Rock” (27/20)
Elizabeth Perkins, “Weeds” (5/1)
Amy Poehler, “Saturday Night Live” (3/1)
Kristin Wiig, “Saturday Night Live” (7/2)
Vanessa Williams, “Ugly Betty” (9/4)

Our Pick and Prediction: Jane Krakowski
Being able to keep a straight face when she bursts into song mid-sentence deserves an award in itself.

Game of Thrones – The Cast Is In! (or most of it, at least)

A slew of casting announcements were made this week for HBO’s “A Game of Thrones.” Here’s the cast thus far:

Tyrion Lannister - Peter Dinklage

Daenerys Targaryen - Tamzin Merchant

Ser Jorah Mormont - Iain Glen

You may know him from: “Resident Evil

Theon Greyjoy - Alfie Allen

You may know him from: “Atonement” and “The Other Boleyn Girl
(Fun Fact: Alfie is the younger bro of Lily Allen)

robb

Robb Stark - Richard Madden

jonsnow

Jon Snow - Kit Harrington

And some relative newcomers:

Sansa Stark – Sophie Turner

Arya Stark – Maisie Williams

Joffrey Baratheon – Jack Gleeson

There are a few casting choices that I raise an eyebrow at- mainly Jon Snow and Daenerys. I don’t want to be an obnoxious Twilight-style fangirl about this, but Kit Harrington looks just a touch on the poofy side.
I can’t help but feel that some of our Dream Cast choices were perhaps a little better. Just a little…
But in all honesty, they could film an entire cast of muppets, and I’d still watch.
Filming is scheduled to begin in October in Belfast, Northern Ireland in late October.

Ranking the New TV Shows: #14 – Glee

June 25, 2009 by Tim & Lex
Filed under TV, TV Previews, TV Reviews

The 14th best show is something of an anomaly in that the pilot was released this spring, but the rest of the series will not air until next fall. With just one episode to judge, it probably got docked a few points. Looking purely at potential, we could have put it a few spots higher. Either way, from 14 on is a huge step up from the bottom of the rankings. All of the shows from here on out show a lot of promise.

Glee

Glee

The show:Glee
Synopsis: A quirky version of “High School Musical” for Prime Time television from the creator of “Nip/Tuck“. Teacher and all-around great guy, Will Scheuster (Matthew Morrison) fights to keep the Glee Club alive and recruit new talent in a high school focused on popularity, cheerleading, sports, etc.
Debuted: May 19th, 2009 (Official Series Premiere: September, 16, 2009)
Our take: The show is pretty funny, with humor ranging from Jane Lynch’s macho cheer coach to the eccentricities of the nerd crowd.  The primary core of characters each have a distinct voice.   There’s the Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron), the super achiever who’s got the perfectly contradictory balance of insecurity and overconfidence.  Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith) is the yin to her yang as the nice guy jock who dares to join the uncool Glee Club to the chagrin of his fellow football players. It goes on like that with other characters. Each one has their own idiosyncrasies and comedic style. On the other hand it’s a little black-and-white with the good guys and bad. The puppet strings are obvious. Will is too nice, and his wife is clearly an excuse for an obstacle, not a real person.
What it would need to do to keep me watching: The pilot of “Glee” climaxes, of course, with a big song and dance routine. I felt they missed a huge opportunity to show the talent of the cast by way overproducing it. Earlier musical numbers stood out because they seemed (and were) real. I know they wanted to really blow everyone away with the grand finale, but the outcome was phony. This was a chance to stand out from other tv shows and even movies by having an organic vocal performance that the audience could connect with. They could have had a comedy series with a touch of Broadway. Instead they have a comedy series with a touch of Britney Spears. Will I watch next year? It’s iffy.

A Storm of Stars: Casting HBO’s “Game of Thrones” Part 2

June 23, 2009 by Tim & Lex

We’re constantly getting new (and in some cases improved) Game of Thrones casting ideas. (Check the original here.) Some are from shows we’re watching now, and some are awesome suggestions from our readers. Here are a few:

Stannis Baratheon - Colm Feore

Stannis Baratheon - Colm Feore

Feore was suggested by a reader, and we think he’s perfect. He’s got Stannis’ jaw down pat.

Theon Greyjoy - Jimmi Simpson

Theon Greyjoy - Jimmi Simpson

Jimmi Simpson is hilarious in “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia“, but he also nailed dramatic roles in “Carnivale” and “Zodiac.”

Khal Drogo - Oded Fehr

Khal Drogo - Oded Fehr

We actually considered Oded Fehr for the role of Khal Drogo in our first round of casting, so when one of our readers made the suggestion, it was fate that he’d be a part of Round 2.

Lord Varys - Ian McNeice

Lord Varys - Ian McNeice

McNeice played Baron Harkonen in the “Dune” miniseries and was amusing in “Rome” as the town cryer.

And perhaps the two most criticized of our choices:

Gregor "The Mountain That Rides" Clegane - Ron Perlman

Gregor "The Mountain That Rides" Clegane - Ron Perlman

Rumor has it that GRRM himself said that a younger Ron Perlman would be his ideal Sandor Clegane. So why not cast him as big bro?

Sandor "The Hound" Clegane - Chance Kelly

Sandor "The Hound" Clegane - Chance Kelly

Kelly has had semi-villainous roles in both “Generation Kill” and  “Fringe.” The Hound would give him another to sink his teeth into. It’s a happy coincidence that the shadow in the photo makes him look burned on one side of his face.

Love it? Hate it? Comment about it.

True Blood Most Watched HBO show since Sopranos Finale

June 19, 2009 by Tim & Lex

The “True Blood” ratings are in, and they are huge. The Nielsen numbers show “True Blood” at 3.7 million viewers, which doesn’t account for DVR or time-shifted viewers – HBO estimates those bring the total to 5.1 million. It’s up 50% from the 2.4 million that watched last year’s season finale. It’s also the best showing for an HBO show since “The Sopranos” finale brought in over 11.9 million a couple years ago.

Even more good news – “True Blood” DVDs are currently number one on Amazon in DVD sales and on sale for $24.99.

This is huge for HBO, a network that looked on the brink of dropping way off after shows like “The Sopranos,” “Deadwood,” “The Wire,” and “Six Feet Under” ended their runs and replacements, like “John from Cincinnati,” failed to connect with an audience. It looks like Fantasy might be their new go to genre with the success of “True Blood” and George R. R. Martin’s anticipated “Game of Thrones” around the corner.
