Game of Thrones – The Cast Is In! (or most of it, at least)

A slew of casting announcements were made this week for HBO’s “A Game of Thrones.” Here’s the cast thus far:

Tyrion Lannister - Peter Dinklage

Catelyn Stark - Jennifer Ehle

Daenerys Targaryen - Tamzin Merchant

Ser Jorah Mormont - Iain Glen

Theon Greyjoy - Alfie Allen

You may know him from: “Atonement” and “The Other Boleyn Girl“
(Fun Fact: Alfie is the younger bro of Lily Allen)

Viserys Targaryen - Harry Lloyd

You may know him from: “Robin Hood“

Robb Stark - Richard Madden

Jon Snow - Kit Harrington

And some relative newcomers:

Sansa Stark – Sophie Turner

Arya Stark – Maisie Williams

Joffrey Baratheon – Jack Gleeson

There are a few casting choices that I raise an eyebrow at- mainly Jon Snow and Daenerys. I don’t want to be an obnoxious Twilight-style fangirl about this, but Kit Harrington looks just a touch on the poofy side.
I can’t help but feel that some of our Dream Cast choices were perhaps a little better. Just a little…
But in all honesty, they could film an entire cast of muppets, and I’d still watch.
Filming is scheduled to begin in October in Belfast, Northern Ireland in late October.

A Storm of Stars: Casting HBO’s “Game of Thrones” Part 2

We’re constantly getting new (and in some cases improved) Game of Thrones casting ideas. (Check the original here.) Some are from shows we’re watching now, and some are awesome suggestions from our readers. Here are a few:

Stannis Baratheon - Colm Feore

Feore was suggested by a reader, and we think he’s perfect. He’s got Stannis’ jaw down pat.

Theon Greyjoy - Jimmi Simpson

Jimmi Simpson is hilarious in “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia“, but he also nailed dramatic roles in “Carnivale” and “Zodiac.”

Khal Drogo - Oded Fehr

We actually considered Oded Fehr for the role of Khal Drogo in our first round of casting, so when one of our readers made the suggestion, it was fate that he’d be a part of Round 2.

Lord Varys - Ian McNeice

McNeice played Baron Harkonen in the “Dune” miniseries and was amusing in “Rome” as the town cryer.

And perhaps the two most criticized of our choices:

Gregor "The Mountain That Rides" Clegane - Ron Perlman

Rumor has it that GRRM himself said that a younger Ron Perlman would be his ideal Sandor Clegane. So why not cast him as big bro?

Sandor "The Hound" Clegane - Chance Kelly

Kelly has had semi-villainous roles in both “Generation Kill” and “Fringe.” The Hound would give him another to sink his teeth into. It’s a happy coincidence that the shadow in the photo makes him look burned on one side of his face.

Burn Notice: Season Two

This is one show I really need to get caught up on. I’m glad to see that it’s currently ranked the 7th best selling among DVDs right now on Amazon, with Season One not far behind at #46. You can also get $12 off if you buy the Season One and Two bundle.

Family Guy, Vol. 7

The new “Family Guy” DVD set covers the last four episodes of Season Six and the first nine of Season Seven. It’s loaded with extras like commentaries on every episode, deleted scenes and featurettes, including one with footage of Comic Con 2008.

The Seventh Seal (Criterion Collection)

One of the best movies of all time finally gets the Criterion treatment plus a Blu-ray release.

Friday the 13th (Extended Killer Cut)

The remake hits the shelves with an extended cut.

First “Battlestar Galactica: The Plan” Teasers Out Now

The Sci Fi channel released the first two frakkin’ teasers for “Battlestar Galactica: The Plan”, the prequel movie to the series. “The Plan” will air in November and documents the Cylon plotting and execution of the nuclear attack on the colonies.

Year One

This is the first trailer that’s made me laugh in a while – thanks to David Cross. Jack Black and Michael Cera star as essentially the first lazy men in history.

Under Our Skin

This documentary about Lyme disease looks pretty alarming.

Dead Snow

Nazi zombies in the snow.

Whatever Works

Woody Allen directs Larry David. It looks fairly funny, though Evan Rachel Wood seems pretty annoying.

$9.99

Animated comedy about the meaning of life based on the short stories of Etgar Keret. Geoffrey Rush does one of the voices.

End of the Line

This is a documentary about the effects of overfishing. It’s like an anti- “Deadliest Catch.”

The Proposal

I propose that I will never watch this. Ever.

Tonight’s the Night: True Blood Season 2

Season 2 of “True Blood” premieres tonight at 9 pm. We’ve gathered up a slew of videos and pics to satisfy your blood lust over those last few hours. We’ll also have an instant response up tonight shortly after the episode airs, so be sure to check back.

First Michael Moore Teaser Released

Michael Moore has a new, as yet untitled, documentary about what caused the economic collapse – what Moore calls “the biggest robbery in the history of this country” – as well as the subsequent federal bailout. The film is due out October 2, 2009.

The trailer played in a few theaters this weekend, and ushers walked the aisles with cans to collect money for the needy CEOs Moore speaks of in the commercial.

Not a big week for new movies. Here they are, though, ranked in order of how much I’d like to see them (from most to least):

Moon

A thriller in space starring Sam Rockwell. The basic premise, a guy stationed alone in space for 3 years, reminded me a ton of the George R.R. Martin scifi short story “The Second Kind of Loneliness,” which is one of my favorite pieces of short fiction in any genre. “Moon” currently sits at 100% fresh on rotten tomatoes (out of 13 reviews), but it’s a limited release, and I doubt it will be anywhere around here.

Food, Inc.

A documentary about the reality of food as an industry and how far it is from the images used to market food to us. This might be like the opposite of watching food porn like “Top Chef,” but I’m still curious.

Street Dreams

Rob Dyrdek (of MTV’s “Rob & Big“) wrote a movie. There’s about a 110% chance that it won’t be very good.

Blast!

A documentary about astrophysicists living fast and not dying young. I’d be shocked if this came around here. I’ll give pretty much any doc a chance, though, so I may find it on DVD down the road.

Tetro (opens June 11)

Francis Ford Copolla’s new movie. Will it be his first good movie in 30 years? Doubtful. At least with Vincent Gallo as the lead, it’s guaranteed to be moderately annoying.

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3

Synopsis: John Travolta takes a bunch of hostages and many cars flip over. This is the third feature film adaptation of the novel by John Godey.

Imagine That

Eddie Murphy kids movie that reminds me of Jim Carrey’s “Liar Liar.”
